eNPS (employee Net Promoter Score) is borrowed from customer NPS: employees are asked “How likely are you to recommend this company as a place to work?” on a 0–10 scale. Scores are bucketed:

Promoters: 9–10
Passives: 7–8
Detractors: 0–6

eNPS = % Promoters − % Detractors. Range: −100 to +100.

Why people watch it:

Single number, reported over time, comparable across companies.
Correlates (loosely) with retention and employer-brand strength.
Easy to run at high frequency.

Known limitations — name these, it's what the question is actually about:

Single-number hidden composition. An eNPS of +20 can come from +40% promoters − 20% detractors, or from +30% promoters − 10% detractors. Those are different organizations.
Social desirability bias. Employees underreport dissatisfaction, especially in cultures with weak anonymity or retaliation concerns. Pair with anonymous free-response.
Cultural and language effects. eNPS means different things in different countries. A “7” is a good score in Japan; the same 7 in the US is indifference. Cross-country rollups need cultural normalization or country-specific targets.
Doesn’t tell you what to fix. A low eNPS is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Pair with driver questions (compensation, manager, career growth, work-life balance).
Response rate matters. Low response rates bias toward the engaged or the disgruntled; middle-of-the-distribution employees don’t answer. Report response rate alongside.
Frequency fatigue. Quarterly may be too often; employees stop taking it seriously. Monthly pulse micro-surveys with narrower question sets are better for most orgs.

What to pair it with:

Engagement driver scores (compensation, manager, career, belonging, purpose).
Open-ended analysis of free-response themes — often the most actionable signal.
Segment cuts — by function, tenure, level, manager, demographic.
Regrettable attrition — ultimate lagging indicator of whether the eNPS trend is real.

What great looks like in practice: eNPS is the topline for the people dashboard; driver scores are the narrative; free-response is the action list.
